Buying Materials

Whilst Erik was at school, I nipped out to Dunwoody’s in Caterham to purchase the wood for his layout. Having deliberated, it was agreed on 4′ x 2′ boards, which can be conveniently cut from a single 8′ x 4′ sheet of board, plus 2″ x 1″ soft wood is generally better from timber merchants than from DIY superstores.

Half hour later and £52 lighter, I had four 4′ x 2′ 9mm MDF boards and sixteen 4′ lengths of 2″ x 1″ soft wood tucked into the back of the car. Having all the wood cut on site meant that at least it was straight and true! Also, it was a lot quicker, made fitting it into the car easier and reduces the number of cuts needed to make the boards.

Also purchased was a bottle of Evostik PVA and a box of 200 1½” No 8 wood screws.
