Laying Down Cork
Erik and I spent half hour this evening cutting cork tiles to form the underlay for the track. We dug two half circles of track out of the boxes and arranged them on the two boards forming the test track.
Each tile being a foot square, the board’s being 4′ x 2′, and the track forming a symmetrical and centred half circle on each board, I positioned four cork tiles on each board, aligned to a grid rather than the track.
On marking the tiles for cutting, I quickly realised that there were only two variations of cut, and one was a mirror image of the other. We therefore used the first two tiles as templates to cut the remaining six.
The offcuts will be used to fill in the gaps, as well as any odd areas on the middle board, which will contain sidings.
Having marked the board where each cork tile will go, the next stage is to sand back the gloss paint to provide a key, between the lines that we’d drawn round the cork, and then glue them down.
